THE PATH

Translated from the original ‘Con Duong’,

by N. Saomai

Down our way let’s go then, darling

when below the mountain

the evening is filled

with rising icy chill.

And we a bee and ant

up the hill now trying,

and now no word whispering

the blue moon¾ the word

of spiritual scenery.

Take the step, but slowly

by the row of trees

and shake not¾

lest the day falls.

Our shadows are now cast

over the pass down below

Any feeling of desolation, darling?

Let’s lie down here to sleep

in this autumn forest

Let’s awake the next morn to find

our bodies midst the shrouding mist

In the morn we’ll desert it¾

the city, and forget it all

And alone, we direct our walks

through this path leading to nothingness.

                         Original version:

                         Con đường

này em ta dắt nhau về
vang vang dưới núi
chiều lạnh rồi
cái ong cái kiến
qua đồi
trăng xanh nữa im lời nước mây
bước chầm chậm dưới hàng cây
đừng rung em nhé
sợ ngày rụng theo
bóng ta rớt dưới chân đèo
em ơi thấy ít nhiều hoang vu
thôi nằm ngủ dưới rừng thu
mai ta thức dậy thân mịt sương...
mai ta bỏ phố quên phường

dìu nhau đi suốt con đường không
